Dear pastors, missionaries, chaplains and friends,
Steve here… One of the exciting things I get to watch is believers from our churches as they go on short- (one week to two months) and mid- (two months to two years) term mission trips to help our Fellowship International missionaries on the field. For example, we have had many teams teach English in Colombia as an evangelistic tool to support a new church plant.
Since 1969 our Fellowship churches, through Fellowship International, have had an ongoing connection to church planting efforts in Colombia. A huge part of our legacy in Colombia is the El Redil movement in and around Medellin. As church and Association leadership roles have been assumed by Colombian believers, the number of Fellowship International personnel on-site has been reduced. At the same time, the number of partnerships between El Redil and Canadian Fellowship churches across the country has increased. One of these partnerships has been between Revelstoke Fellowship Baptist (BC), Greenbelt Fellowship Baptist (Ottawa), and Redil del Sur in Sabaneta, Colombia. At the heart of the partnership was the identification of a way to develop connections within the community of Sabaneta to the Redil del Sur church through a felt-need for English language learning. This brought about the Vive El Ingles program, which is a one-week intensive ESL course run by short-term teams from Revelstoke and Greenbelt, which has been a great success both in community relationships and in presenting the Gospel.
Out of the Vive El Ingles program, the Redil del Sur church realized the need to continue to build and develop connections that were made, to have a venue to develop further contacts, and see those contacts become connected with the church. ThusThe Speaking Centre was born.
The Speaking Centre is managed by a brother from the Redil del Sur church, and is staffed by mid-term personnel (a couple or two singles) who come from Fellowship churches, through Fellowship International, serving for one month per year for a period of three years. The Speaking Centre provides Canadian partners with additional time and more direct personal interaction with students, strengthening the preliminary connections made with Colombians through Vive El Ingles, in order to connect them to the El Redil de Sur church on a regular basis.
The Speaking Centre was a new project for Redil del Sur, but it has already seen over half a dozen Canadian individuals and couples invest a month each to help further the work of the Gospel in Sabaneta. Redil del Sur has greatly appreciated the partnership of our churches in helping them connect and reach out to their community.
Going forward, the greatest need at The Speaking Centre is for more Canadian couples and/or individuals from our Fellowship churches to partner with them by giving a month to teach English and invest in the lives of Colombians in Sabaneta. If you or someone within your congregation would be interested in finding out more about this unique and amazing opportunity, take part in the next phase of the Fellowship’s connection to God’s work in Colombia — please contact Chris Middleton (STM Connexion Coordinator for Fellowship International) at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We’re looking for those looking for an adventure in an amazing mission field. Do we have anyone out there?!
Have a blessed week,
