Dear pastors, missionaries, chaplains and friends,
Steve here… In 2015, 4.5 million (or 75% of all under-five deaths) occurred within the first year of life. The risk of a child dying before completing their first year is highest in Africa (55 infant deaths per 1,000 live births).
The good news is that globally, infant mortality rates are dropping. Decreasing from an estimated rate of 63 deaths per 1,000 live births in 1990… to 32 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2015. That’s a reduction by half the deaths in a 25 year span of time.
Wonderful news. Except that statistic actually means 4.5 million babies died in 2015. Over four million infants perished this past year to disease, malnutrition, abuse and war. A staggering number.
For almost 50 years our Fellowship, along with our Conservative Baptist brethren south of the border, have been supporting a critical ministry in Shikarpur, Pakistan, helping mothers and babies. Countless thousands of infants have gone on to thrive via the maternal care they received from the Shikarpur Christian Hospital.
This month, through to Easter, our FAIR department is receiving funds toward an important humanitarian appeal.
I’ve asked our FAIR Director Dan Shurr to comment on this FAIR appeal, share the tools you can use to promote this appeal in your church, and explain how you can give.
FAIR, through the ministry of Fellowship International is partnering with the Shikarpur Christian Hospital in the Sindh province of Pakistan to raise funds for infrastructure and renovations. SCH has been a major part of the Fellowship’s ministry in Pakistan for nearly 50 years, and through their medical ministry, has provided an avenue for our missionaries and their national partners to share the Gospel in this predominantly Muslim country. I’ve had the opportunity to visit the hospital and see first-hand the excellent work and the impact this ministry has on the people of the Sindh province.
In Pakistan, the child and maternal death rates are amongst the worst in the world, with 8% of children never reaching the age of five. The causes of these deaths are mainly preventable. This emphasizes the significance of SCH’s medical work, which has made a significant impact on improving maternal and child health since it was built in the 1960s. Although the hospital’s buildings are more than adequate to support the work, major renovations are required so that SCH can continue to provide a safe and welcoming environment for this worthy ministry caring for the physical and spiritual health of the people in the Sindh province. Our goal is to raise $75,000, which will go towards: improvements and additions to the family housing units for staff, including roof and flooring replacements, and a new kitchen and bathroom, roof and flooring replacements for the outpatient department, and other general improvements.
We’re asking that you prayerfully consider supporting the ministry of SCH by donating to this infra-structure improvement effort. You could even consider making this a church Easter offering.
