A Word From Steve Jones
September 24th, 2018
Dear pastors, missionaries, chaplains and friends,
Steve here… In my President’s address at our 2013 Fellowship National Conference, I asked everyone to “get on mission with God!” I likened our churches to a ship in a coastal harbour. When a tremendous storm hits a coastal harbour, it’s the most dangerous place for a ship to be.
The likelihood is that the ship will be damaged, if not destroyed. During a storm, ships will often lift anchor and launch out to sea; the harbour is the last place it wants to be.
In fact, no ship was ever designed nor created to sit forever in a harbour. Sitting in the harbour robs it of the purpose for which it was created. Ships were created to go out to sea.
The church was created and designed by God to sail the high seas. Ships that only stay in harbour experience dry rot. Churches rot from the inside out when they’re not intentionally involved in the mission for which God created them. Churches are to be involved in the mission, to get out there and get the job done—to sense the pure joy of the wind of the Spirit filling our sails as we move confidently forward, toward the goal… on missions.
Who wants to get on mission?
Over the past two years, our Fellowship movement has done some “navel-gazing”: hundreds of pastors and people participated in filling out surveys, discussing in focus-groups, deciding in retreat gatherings, and modifying in Regional and National Councils. The fruit is a single, simple, one-page document that shares the mission, vision, values and strategic direction of our Fellowship of churches.
The Fellowship Direction Document serves as our “Statement of Mission” as an association of churches. It clearly identifies “who we are” and “what we do” as local churches, which also identifies what we do and do not do as a movement of churches.
Please consider giving our new FDD to others who love our Fellowship—get the word out. I would also encourage you to watch a brief video that provides more information about our FDD. Find both the FDD and video on our website at www.wearethefellowship.ca.
Let’s pray together that our FDD will be used by the Spirit of God to develop a greater spirit of interdependence among us as a movement of churches. We want to advance the Gospel and cause of Christ… together!
Have a blessed week,
