Dear Pastors, Missionaries, Chaplains and Friends,
Steve here…Christmas is right around the corner and I imagine we’re all gearing up for the season. Neighbours on my street have hung the lights on their homes…I love the lights!
Jesus said of Himself in John 8:12: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Our Saviour shared these profound words while the “Feast of Tabernacles” was being celebrated. Jesus may have been celebrating this event at the Temple, possibly standing in the “Court of the Women” in front of four great golden candelabras. Each with four large golden bowls full of oil and lit. Observers in Jesus’ day claimed the light from these candelabras were so brilliant that they lit up much of Jerusalem at night.
This became Jesus’ “object lesson” while he declared aloud, “I am the light of the world!” A light for all people to find safe haven in the darkness.
During a Christmas pageant at a church, a group of children played the familiar characters that were present at the birth of Christ. Huddled around the manger, the stage-hand had put a light bulb in the manger wrapped up in some sheets. During Mary’s final speech, the light bulb flickered and then went out. Flustered, the little girl plating Mary stopped her speech and, concerned, said: “Who turn out Jesus?” Let’s all seek to make sure the light of the Gospel burns bright this Christmas.
Have a blessed week,
Our theme verse for 2013:
“We live by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:7 (NIV)
Note: The Christmas FAIR Project will be shared in a church service.
