Rules, Regulations & Build Requirements

🎯 Purpose
The Soap Box Derby is a fun, family-friendly event designed to build community and enjoy some friendly competition. Safety and sportsmanship are our top priorities.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Eligibility

• Open to children and youth Grades 2 - 6
• All participants must register before racing
  
• A parent/guardian must be present and responsible for each participant

Car Build Requirements
⚙️ Basic Design

• Must be gravity-powered only (no motors, pedals, or propulsion)
• ​Cars must have four wheels (2 front, 2 rear)
  
• All four wheels must remain in contact with the ground at all times
  
• Must include working steering and brakes

🛞 Wheels & Fairness

• Standard rubber wheels must be used
• Lubrication is allowed

🪵 Construction

• Floorboard must be made from solid plywood (recommended ¾”)
  
• Particle board or weak materials are not permitted
  
• Car must be structurally sound and securely built
  
• No sharp edges or exposed hazards
  
• Major components must be securely fastened (bolts strongly recommended)

🛑 Braking System

• Must have foot-operated brakes
  
• Brakes must be capable of stopping the car safely in a straight line
  
• Brakes must not damage the track or ground surface

🎮 Steering

• Steering must be controlled by a steering wheel (not a T-bar)
  
• Steering must be secure and responsive
  
• No loose or unstable steering systems

🪑 Driver Position & Safety Features

• Driver must sit low and securely in the car
  
• Feet must be positioned forward while racing
  
• A secure seat and back support is required
  
• A seatbelt is strongly recommended
  
• (Optional but encouraged for added safety: headrest and roll bar)

⚖️ Size & Weight (Simple Limits)

• Maximum total weight (car + driver): 250 lbs
  
• Car must be a safe, manageable size for the course
  
• Minimum ground clearance recommended: 3 inches

🦺 Safety Requirements

• Helmet is required (bike, hockey, etc.)
  
• Closed-toe shoes required
  
• Racers must remain seated at all times

Race Rules

• Racers will be grouped by age if needed
• Start only when instructed by a race official
  
• No intentional contact or interference
  
• If a racer leaves their lane or crashes, they must stop immediately

🙌 Conduct & Sportsmanship

• Be respectful to all participants and volunteers
• No unsafe or reckless behavior
  
• Have fun and encourage one another

⚠️ Liability

• Participation is at your own risk
• Parents/guardians are responsible for their child and their cart
  
• Faith Baptist Church and event organizers are not responsible for injury or damage
